Online Therapy FAQ: What Do You Need to Know?

Online therapy can be as beneficial for your pets as it can be for you!

For the past 13 years, I’ve had the privilege of welcoming you into my home for our therapy sessions. This space has been a special part of my life—and I hope it has been for you too.

After nearly 19 years in our home here in Northamptonshire, we have made the big decision to move house and relocate to Suffolk. This decision was not taken lightly, but it feels right for this chapter of our lives.

Being able to work online with my clients has made this move possible.

I have been offering therapy sessions online for over a decade now, and around 50% of my clients already connect with me in this way. The sessions follow the same format, and research consistently shows that whether we work in-person or online, the results are just as effective.

I understand that moving from in-person to online may feel different so I have created this FAQ to support you in the change.

  1. Is online therapy as effective as in-person therapy?

Yes, extensive research shows that online therapy can be just as effective as traditional face-to-face sessions. The key factors to the success of any therapy - your relationship with your therapist, the safe space provided, and the commitment to the process - remain unchanged, whether in-person or online.

  2. Will online sessions feel different than in-person?

For some, the shift may feel different initially, but most of my clients tell me they quickly forget we aren’t in the room together! The format, structure, and therapeutic process remain the same.

  3. How do online sessions work?

Sessions are conducted over a secure video platform (Google Meet) where privacy and confidentiality are a top priority. You’ll receive a private link for each session and can join from any quiet, private location with a reliable internet connection.

  4. What are the benefits of working online?

Having worked online for over a decade I have had lots of feedback from my clients. The number one benefit my clients tell me is convenience - they don’t have to battle the traffic to get to me and can even fit in a session in their lunch break!

One unexpected benefit has been on my clients pets! Many pets choose to join my clients for their sessions, especially the relaxation bit!

They love it when you relax so deeply and they are often drawn to spend time with you when you do. Many pets have become used to the music I use during the relaxation and will come immediately to settle with their owners when they hear it!

  5. What do I need for an online session?

    • ·      A private space where you feel comfortable

    • ·      A device with a camera and microphone (computer, tablet, or smartphone)

    • ·      Reliable internet connection

    • ·      If you’re new to Google Meet, you’ll receive instructions in advance to make your first session seamless. Logging on a few minutes early helps sort out any technical issues.

  6. What if I’m not comfortable with technology?

Modern video platforms are very easy to use with a little practice. Support will be provided ahead of your first session, and step-by-step guidance is available any time you need it.

  7. How can I prepare for my online session?

Set up in a quiet, private environment where you won’t be disturbed. Close other apps and devices to limit distractions. Silence notifications and alarms. Have a glass of water or tissues nearby if you like. You may wish to have a blanket and a cushion nearby for the relaxation element of your session.

  8. Is online therapy confidential?

Confidentiality remains as important as ever to me. Google Meet is secure and all sessions are encrypted. Please ensure your environment is private so other people at home cannot overhear. No session recordings are made.

  9. What if I experience technical problems or loose internet?

Technical issues are rare but if you do experience issues try rejoining via the meeting link sent to you for your appointment. If that doesn’t work don’t worry, I will follow up promptly by phone to support you or reschedule.

  10. Can I reschedule or cancel online sessions?

Yes, the same flexible rescheduling and cancellation policies apply to my online sessions too. You can use your booking link or just let me know as soon as possible if you need to make any changes. I require a minimum of 24 hours notice to cancel an appointment so that I can make it available to other clients.

  11. Can I contact you if I have more questions?

Yes of course! I am always happy to chat through any concerns you may have so please do get in touch.
